The Independent Police Complaints Commission is to investigate video footage showing West Midlands Police officers arresting two men in Aston − after the force voluntarily referred the matter to the police watchdog.

Video circulating on social media showed plain clothes officers arresting two men in Upper Sutton Street on Sunday (30/07).

A 28-year-old man was cautioned for possessing cannabis and a 20-year-old man detained for a public order offence but later released under investigation while enquiries progress.

West Midlands Police voluntarily referred the matter to the IPCC and the Commission has chosen to independently look into the matter.

Three local neighbourhood officers – all of constable rank − have been redeployed to other work while the investigation continues; during that time they will not be engaged in duties outside police stations.
