Jewelled cross stolen from St Mary’s church in Handsworth.

The jewelled cross (pictured) was believed to have been stolen from the church on Hamstead Road on Sunday night (05/02) or in the early hours of Monday morning (06/02).

The cross stands about 45-50cm high and has diamonds at the right corners and two rubies half-way up the cross. There is a white half sphere of semi-precious stone in the centre.

The Revd Dr Bob Stephen, said: “The people (probably more than one) used a great deal of force to jemmy the main door causing a great deal of damage to a door that was installed in 1875.

A silver cross and candles set which was Birmingham made in 1982 was also stolen, along with a 59cm brass alms dish from c.1900 and a silver triple oil stock.”
