Man arrested after four people were rescued from a flat fire in Sutton Coldfield.

Police have arrested a man after two young children and two women were rescued from a flat fire in Sutton Coldfield.

Emergency services were called to Mount View, at around 1.30PM on Monday afternoon (06/03), to reports of a fire in a block of flats.

A three-month-old baby girl, an 18-month-old boy and two women were rescued from the balcony of the third floor flat.

A man, aged 43, was arrested, just before 5pm, on suspicion of arson with intent to endanger life and is currently helping police with their enquiries.

Almost 30 people were evacuated from the block of flats while emergency services dealt with the fire.

Sergeant Amir Abid, from Stechford police station, said: “Emergency services, including my officers helped co-ordinate the evacuation of the flats and fortunately no-one was seriously hurt.

“We are treating the fire as suspicious and believe this was a reckless act that could have had severe consequences.

“While residents were waiting outside the flats a suspect was spotted and a man arrested.”
