Tomorrow is Chinese New Year and, for many of us, it’s the perfect reason to head to Birmingham’s best Chinese restaurants and enjoy traditional roasted meats piled high on rice. Nobody can resist Peking duck, pork ribs, or some egg fried rice in fact, just thinking about it is making my mouth water.
In case you didn’t know, this year is the year of the Pig. Recent years of the Pig are: 1935, 1947, 1959, 1971, 1983, 1995, 2007, 2019. Pigs have a beautiful personality; they are blessed with good fortune in life and their chubby faces and big ears are signs of good luck.
Most importantly, Chinese New Year is about making the effort to get together with family, and sharing a meal. So tomorrow, brighten your usually dull Tuesday and head to any of these Chinese restaurants.
Top of the list has got to be Chung Ying, a family-run independent, with two restaurants in the city: Chung Ying Cantonese and China Town. Their original iconic Chinese restaurant opened in 1981, the first Chinese restaurant in the area now known as China Town. They serve authentic Cantonese cuisine with dim sum, bao and Chinese small plates, as well as the usual favourites. The Chinese New Year menu will be available for the 15-day Chinese New Year period: 5th February – 19th February 2019.
Next up is Ming Moon. This vibrant restaurant will have a delightful selection of Chinese dishes in their buffet, which consists of over a hundred selections. Some of the special dishes in the evening includes duck in plum sauce, salt and pepper prawns, stir-fried lamb and cumin and many more. Starting at 7PM on the evening of Chinese New Year, they will be putting on a special lion dance performance, with live music and plenty of raffle prizes to be won.
Wing Wah will be celebrating with a very special selection of Chinese New Year dim sum and a special A La Carte set menu will be on for a limited time only. All their dim sum is handmade by their skilled chefs. The selection includes steamed piglet buns, Chinese chicken biscuits and a special dim sum selection with sea cucumber dumplings, crispy salmon rolls, rice cakes, sweet stuffed buns and more!
