Detectives have launched a murder investigation after a man died following a stabbing in the city centre on Tuesday (23/08).

Emergency services were called to Summer Lane in Newtown, at around 7:55PM, to reports of the stabbing.

On arrival, crews found a man, aged 26, with life-threatening injuries – he was taken to hospital, but his condition deteriorated and he sadly died today (25/08).

A post-mortem will take place in due course to establish a cause of death.

No arrests have been made but officers continue to investigate several lines of enquiry.

Detective Inspector Paul Joyce, from West Midlands Police CID, said: “Despite the best efforts of the medical staff the man’s injuries were so severe that he unfortunately died and we have now launched an murder investigation.

“We are in the process of contacting the man’s family and will not be in a position to name him until this has been concluded and we have formally identified him.

“We continue to investigate the circumstances that led to his death, CCTV is being trawled and we are appealing to anyone who was in the vicinity at the time of the incident to come forward.

“I would also like to appeal directly to the person responsible, to do the right thing and to come forward. We have several lines of enquiry and it is only a matter of time before we come knocking at your door.”
