About us

Birmingham Updates was set up during the August 2011 riots to dispel myth and rumour in the city. Through our breaking and straight to the fact updates, we have grown organically to become the most engaged local media channel in the region.

Meet the team

Drew Craythorne
Drew is particularly passionate about producing engaging copy surrounding lifestyle and events in Birmingham. She uses her love of connecting online to find out about top trends, pop culture and the best places to visit across the city, especially for booze and food! You’re most likely to find her face-first in a bowl of mac & cheese, listening to music of the nineties, watching Con Air on repeat, or hunting down sour beers.
Oli Hills
Having joined the team in January 2017, Oli has paved the way to working with brands to increase their reach and engagement with our audiences. Experienced in tech start-ups and finance, Oli is obsessed with data. Loves all things cycling and golf with a soft spot for Newcastle United.
Sally Farrant
Sally strives to be a groundbreaker in the social media world; she doesn't just follow the latest trends but produces innovative content which is ahead of the curve. Her passion is for all things to do with the ancient world and she has a love of language. She is the self-proclaimed ‘Queen of Parmesan Cheese’ and can never pass up a bowl of pasta.
Kyle Moore
The newest member to the BU team, Kyle loves all things tech, you can normally find him in a dark server room or demolishing a bar of chocolate. Kyle is experienced in the news world, having run his own local news site in Birmingham for the past 6 years.
Ollie Sumnall
Ollie is an ambitious salesperson with entrepreneurial instincts. Ollie is determined to demonstrate the value of advertising with Updates Media through working with brands to increase their reach and engagement with our audiences. Aside from work, Ollie is a huge sports fan, particularly Boxing and Football, and unfortunately supports Arsenal.
Ciara Butterworth
As an accomplished multimedia editor, Ciara is passionate about delivering authentic and compelling lifestyle content across all digital platforms. Sharing her love of entertainment, wellbeing, arts, food and people, she strives to keep Birmingham updated on all the latest activities, hottest trends and unmissable events happening across the city. Aside from work, she's a fitness fanatic with an affinity for horror and a shameless appreciation for cats.
George Elsmere
George is an overly caffeinated freelance writer and food blogger, forever exploring Birmingham's hidden gems. She's passionate about finding and sharing the best places to eat, drink and have fun around the city. When she's not writing, you'll find her posting pictures of her lunch on Instagram, propping up the bar with a Gin and Tonic in hand, or shouting about comics on Twitter.
Sarah King
Sarah recently joined the team in 2019. She loves writing about exciting cultural events and is passionate about encouraging others to experience the joys of theatre, comedy, and art! You are most likely to find her on the front row of a comedy show laughing her socks off, and probably getting picked on by the comedian! In her spare time, she draws cartoons and listens to a lot of podcasts.
Suzanne Elliot
Suzanne is a writer, blogger and honorary Brummie. She loves finding new things to see and do in and around the city, particularly when it involves good food, a great view or a fantastic show. In her spare time Suzanne can be found obsessing about the latest make-up releases or watching Marvel films.
