The alternative rock pub has been hugely significant to the development of the city’s alternative-music scene since its beginnings back in 1969. Despite a huge outcry from gig goers sparking a petition it has officially announced its closure. In an emotional post on their Facebook page The Flapper confirmed that 30th June 2018 will see their last day of trade. Although, true to form, they will go out with a bang and host a momentous celebration in honour of its history. Nevertheless, it remains a sad day for live-music fans.
Birmingham bands, such as The Editors started out at The Flapper, showcasing their initial material. It also has been the venue of choice for bigger names who favour the bar’s intimate atmosphere. Regulars will know that the pub is also a peaceful place for those who enjoy a chilled few rounds of pool or for those who love an outdoorsy drink in summer along the canal. It’s various plus points have seen the venue strike a cord over a lengthy time. So much, so it has been the subject of a keen petition by fans fighting closure, since plans to demolish it were first announced. Those who have founded the ‘Save the Flapper’ initiative are yet to give up hope and intend to push their continued appeal despite the announcement.
The space is due to be replaced by a new development much like its alternative former fellows Subside and The Yardbird. The build will create a 66 apartment complex, shaped as a boat, signifying its placement aside the canal. The £10 million project would be one in a sea of developments taking over the city in recent years.
The Flapper is open as usual until their summer closure date so please make sure you head down to enjoy a gig or two, or just a quick pint in one of Birmingham’s most charming public houses.
