The Flapper will remain open until 2019 after gaining an extension of 12 months whilst the owners discuss future plans with Birmingham City Council. This comes after a large out-cry, earlier this year, when the alternative rock pub announced its initial closure, which was due to take place 30th June 2018.
The area, due for re-development, was going to be transformed into canal side apartments worth an estimated £10 million. However, this original plan fell through much to the joy of petitioning Flapper fans who have strived to prevent the shut-down of a pub that has done much for the city’s music scene since its opening in 1969. As a consequence, Baskerville Wharf, the owners of The Flapper have offered a business extension for the space whilst their future plans are deliberated.
In an official statement they stated: “Plans were submitted in November 2017 for the sites redevelopment and whilst we have withdrawn the current application, we are considering the submission of revised proposals later in 2018. The Flapper Ltd have accepted our offer and will now remain open for business until 30th June 2019.”
A celebration of The Flapper originally organised as a farewell, beginning Friday 29th June will still take place with live-music promised across an entire weekend.
