Everyone loves that thrilling feeling when the first day of the holiday finally arrives and you have the chance to go abroad and experience a new culture. Travelling to a foreign country unlocks the door to new places with interesting people, architecture and ideas. Yet perhaps one of the best things about travelling abroad is having the opportunity to try new food. Check out these delicacies from Birmingham Airport’s top 10 destinations around the world; from skinless sausages to stuffed camel, these dishes are not to be missed!

1. Dublin – Irish Breakfast

A hearty breakfast is loved by all which is why an Irish breakfast is a must-try in Dublin. It consists of bacon, sausages and black and white puddings, eggs, vegetables and potato all fried in creamery butter. It is served with a generous helping of homemade Irish soda or brown bread for soakage and should be washed down with a strong cup of breakfast tea such as Barry or Lyons tea (depending on where you are) and a glass of orange juice.

2. Amsterdam – Frikandel

The frikandel is basically a deep-fried sausage. However, this does not mean that it should not be taken seriously. The frikandel is a long and skinless fried sausage mostly comprised of beef, pork and chicken which is adored by the Dutch. Its skinless element and the makeup of the sausage patty ingredients make frikandel unique in the sausage world. Try it with fritten sauce, onions and a handful of famous Dutch fries!

3. Dusseldorf – Halve Hahn

This vegetarian dish is simple and small yet still completely tasty and is a great starter to any meal. It consists of half a slice of rye bread with a generous dollop of butter and cheese. It is served with onions, pickle and mustard. In Dusseldorf, the cheese served with Halve Hahn is Mainz cheese, produced from skimmed and acidified milk.

If you’re looking for a real Arabian feast when you’re in Dubai, forget about the pizza places and burger huts and keep your eyes peeled for the famous Stuffed Camel. This famously mythical dish is a whole camel stuffed with whole sheep, chicken, fish, rice and eggs! It’s so huge that it made it into the Guinness book of world records as the ˜largest item on any menu in the world’.

6. Brussels – Waffles

It’s almost impossible to go wrong with a waffle. With two delectable options, the Brussels waffle (rectangular and flaky) and the sweeter Liege waffle (rounded corners and a pearl sugar coating), these naughty carb-laden delicacies are well worth the feeling of guilt after being eaten.

7. Frankfurt – Frankfurter

Yes, I know what you’re thinking… another sausage? But this one is a good’en. Frankfurters are long, thin sausages that are flavourful, lightly smoked and made from pork. Traditionally, they are served with bread, yellow mustard, horseradish and sometimes with potato salad.

8. Paris – Snails

France is the worldwide number one consumer of snails (escargot in French) making Paris the best place to try this unique delicacy. I know what you’re thinking, sounds pretty gross – right? You’d be surprised (and I’d advise you to not think about what you’re eating too much when you try these) but snails are actually really delicious, especially when they’re slathered in butter and garlic.

9. Istanbul – Döner

Traditionally known in the UK as a meal to have after a night out, but make no mistake the döner kebab is a Turkish classic (that has also become a bit of a national dish in Germany). The döner comes in many forms including dürüm (döner wrapped in lavaş bread) and iskender kebap (döner on a bed of pide bread with yogurt, tomato sauce, and butter) and tastes best when eaten in Istanbul.

10. Doha – Machboos

This is a spiced rice dish that can be mixed with any kind of marinated meat or seafood you like, including chicken, beef, lamb, camel and fish. It’s one of the most popular Qatari dishes. Some may sprinkle lemon juice and rose water on top to add an extra pang to the flavour. If all the spices aren’t enough for you, a spicy salsa dip is sometimes served next to this dish.
