Firefighters were dispatched to the former cinema and bingo hall on Harborne High Street, at around 12:30AM this morning (19/09), following numerous calls.
West Midlands Fire Service said it had around 50 firefighters tackling the blaze at the start, but the fire is now under control so resources have been scaled back.
A spokesperson, said: “We have been dealing with a severe fire at the old cinema in Harborne.
We have had 50 firefighters working in very difficult conditions. The fire is now under control.
The high street has been reopened, but Greenhill Road remains closed.”
The cause of the blaze is unknown at this stage. A full investigation will take place as soon as the building is safe to do so.
The Grade II-listed building was designed by architect Horace G Bradley in 1930. It operated as a cinema until 1963 when it was converted into a bingo hall but the building has been empty since 2012.
