May the Fourth be with you! What started out as a pun has become a hugely celebrated holiday all over the world with grass-roots fans proclaiming May the fourth as Star Wars Day. But just before you don your Darth Vader costume or learn a few cheeky words of Wookie we’ll let you in on a fun fact.
The first recorded use of the term in the UK was on May 4th 1979 when the Conservative Party celebrated Margaret Thatcher becoming Prime Minister with the slogan “Congratulations Maggie, May the Fourth be with you!”
But Star Wars Day was, of course, created by fans of the iconic film franchise and has grown over the decades to incorporate all manner of celebrations. So this year, if you are looking to celebrate with anything from a Star Wars movie marathon to a Yoda Soda cocktail (that’s a real thing!) here are a few suggestions of how to get all Jedi in town this weekend.
The Original Trilogy screening at The Bristol Pear in Selly Oak from 3pm. Classic memories for the old-school fan, pay a fiver for the whole trilogy experience or £2 per film. There is a well-stocked bar and a brilliant menu to have food delivered right to your seat at The Bristol Pear
The Full Seven-Film Marathon! At Aldridge Methodist Church from 8am. For the hardcore superfan, strap in and view the entire franchise, with Episode VII: The Force Awakens scheduled to finish just before midnight! It is free entry but you’ll have to book first and a cash donation requested at Aldridge Methodist.
May the Fourth Be With You Night at The Hammer & The Anvil in the town centre. Everything Star Wars in the basement bar and live music in the top deck, with prizes for the best dressed and the best imperial march!
Star Wars Theme Night at Sidewalk. Party night at one of the hottest venues in the Gay Village with fancy dress and a sparkling galaxy of special themed offers.
