Attention to any Brummies planning to go to Blackpool at the weekend! In the early hours of this morning (17th July), Blackpools iconic Central Pier broke out into a blaze – with about 50 firefighters in attendance as they have been trying to combat the fire.
Central Pier opened in 1868, and has been an iconic landmark which is instantly recognisable to any who see its 33m-high (108ft) Ferris wheel known as the Big Wheel – funnily enough – which was installed in 1990
In a statement from Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service, crews found a workshop and a ride well alight half way along the pier just after 03:00am this morning. Incident commander Mark Winder said: “Fortunately early firefighter action has extinguished the fire to the extent there is no visible flame.”
The BBC have reported that an investigation is being conducted into its cause, and that the Promenade around the pier was closed for a time, but has since reopened. Read their own full article here.
