Birmingham Cathedral is getting all out-of-this-world this summer as the iconic building hosts Interstellar, an ambitious musical event marking the 50th anniversary of the very first moon landings.

On July 20th, fifty years to the day after Neil Armstrong made his “giant leap for mankind”, the 300 year old building in Colmore Row hosts the 50-piece Limelight Orchestra playing uplifting rock and pop classics by the likes of David Bowie, ELO and Daft Punk in an Interstellar extravaganza.  The cathedral will also be lit up by a spectacular lighting show and state-of-the-art 3D holograms. “This is going to be an amazing event at an incredible location,” said Paul Brindley, of organisers Secret Symphony.

“We have been working on this for a long time and have put together an amazing musical event that people won’t forget.  We’re over the moon with the results!”

Can you see what he did there?

The Limelight Orchestra provides a mind-blowing big sound guaranteed to wow any event.  They are a versatile collaboration of vibrant musicians from across the Midlands, incorporating brass, strings, percussion and rhythm sections supporting impressive vocalists.  The Interstellar event in Birmingham is one of a number being organised at Midlands cathedrals including Lichfield and Coventry, but the Birmingham performance is going to feel extra special because July 20th is the actual anniversary of man first setting foot on the moon.

“The combination of the themed light show, 3D holograms, a 50-piece orchestra and the brilliant acoustics of the cathedral will provide a fitting way of celebrating half a century since man made it to the moon,” said Brindley, adding “This will be one of the biggest musical nights in Brum this year”  He may just be right about that!

Interstellar is at Birmingham Cathedral, Colmore Row on July 20th, and features both a matinee and an evening show.
