Cycling legend Chris Boardman will be joining 1,000 hospital charity riders at the Vélo Birmingham & Midlands 2019 to help raise funds for Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham (QEHB) Charity, Heartlands Hospital Charity, Good Hope Hospital Charity, and Solihull Hospital Charity.
The hospital charity riders will be joined by Chris for the 100 mile ride whilst also helping the 1,000-strong team prepare for the big day by leading a training ride. Chris, who shot to fame with a Gold Medal in the Individual Pursuit at the 1992 Olympics in Barcelona, is hoping that Vélo Birmingham & Midlands will prove a great success, saying:
“I don’t ride bikes anywhere near as fast as I used to but that’s the beauty of this machine, you can ride them any speed you like. A great charity and the prospect of a wonderful day out on two wheels, so I’m really looking forward to getting ready for the event with the my 1,000 rider team, and of course the big day itself.”
The hospital charity provides ‘added extras’ for staff, patients and their families across QEHB, Heartlands Hospital, Good Hope Hospital and Solihull Hospital. From funding cutting-edge pieces of equipment and world-class research, to providing items that make patients’ stays in hospital more comfortable, the Charity works to go ‘over and above’ for patients.
Vélo Birmingham 2017 saw 1,000 riders raise £400,000 for the hospital charity, which made a huge difference to patients across the four hospitals.
Charity Chief Executive, Mike Hammond, said: “The Charity is excited to welcome Chris Boardman into our Velo Birmingham & Midlands family. We are all looking forward to the big day, and seeing over 1,000 riders don a hospital charity jersey and take to the roads to raise money to support patients across the four hospitals.
“The money raised from the 2017 event helped us go ‘over and above’ for our patients, and thanks to the incredible efforts of the 1,000 people who have already signed up to ride for the Charity in this year’s event, we will be able to do even more for our patients in the future.”
The hospital charity still has a number of Gold Bond places available for just £40 with a minimum sponsorship requirement of £400. By riding for the Charity you will get a free cycling jersey, access to hints and tips, and the chance to meet and ride with Chris Boardman. Sign up for your place at bikeforbrum.org
