Surplus food in south-west Birmingham will no longer be going to waste as it will now be used to create free meals for the local community.
Longbridge Methodist Church is the newest location to launch FoodCycle meals using food that would otherwise have gone to waste. Three-course meals will now be available every Monday at 7pm.
FoodCycle, which has 40 community food projects across the UK, uses surplus food from supermarkets to cook healthy wholesome three-course dinners for people who are in need of a warm meal free of charge. It also gives residents a chance to meet other people in the local community.
Birmingham’s Lord Mayor, Yvonne Mosquito, will be opening the project on Monday 25th March and joining the community for a delicious meal.
Justin Powell, FoodCycle Regional Manager for Birmingham said: “Using surplus food and the energy of amazing volunteers, our model is very simple – and we are so pleased that FoodCycle Birmingham Longbridge will soon be up and running in the community.
I invite everyone from the local area to join us for a delicious meal and company, or to get involved as a volunteer”.
FoodCycle Longbridge is also now looking for enthusiastic people who want to volunteer and give something back to their local community. There are a number of roles available from cooking leader to volunteer coordinator, as well as weekly volunteering opportunities.
