Digbeth based cake company, Chitty’s Cakes Limited is set to become the latest independent business to set down solid roots in the newly renovated Custard Factory courtyard.
In 2017 Chitty’s Cakes opened to the delight of those with a sweet tooth, having carved a successful venture in a local studio space, baking wonderful cakes for five years prior. Since the opening of the store Chitty’s has been inundated with requests for more of the fun cake-making classes they put on for aspiring bakers and a bigger space for those to enjoy a cuppa and a slice of the good stuff whilst watching the world pass by!
Chitty’s Cakes have listened to their customers and launched a crowdfunding campaign to help them #bakeacakeshop. Their new space will bring life to the former music venue ‘Oobleck’ opposite The Mockingbird Cinema.
If a success, the new layout will mean visitors shall be able to see their tasty home-made offerings being made from scratch. Additionally, the space is a lot larger and specifically suited to them, allowing prams and wheelchairs easy access to the building.
They also plan to make good use of the outdoor space, to include seating which will allow customers to soak up the creative atmosphere and enjoy the new open courtyard that The Custard Factory offers, taking a spot next door to the renovated Market Hall which will host a wide variety of events upon opening in summer.
In order to reach their dreams Chitty’s Cakes have launched a crowd-funding campaign to help build their customers’ perfect cake shop. For each pledge made, there is a cake-based reward – ranging from a free cupcake to more extravagant ‘money can’t buy’ experiences, like getting to spend the day with owner Rebecca to design and decorate a three-tiered cake that will be displayed in their new shop window. Free cupcakes for a year can be yours for just an £80 pledge.
Rebecca says: “Digbeth, and The Custard Factory in particular, is such an exciting place to be at the moment – we love it here and we want to be at the heart of all the growth and development that’s taking place. We really feel like our business fits well here, but we know we can make a better space to give our customers a better experience”.
