The first food parcels for clinically vulnerable people currently ‘shielding’ themselves due to the COVID-19 pandemic have begun to be distributed across Birmingham.
As part of the response to the national emergency, hundreds of food packages will be delivered across the city, with the first batch packed and distributed today (30/03).
A national plan is being put into action on behalf of the Government which will involve supermarkets delivering this service in the long term, but local authorities are ensuring emergency food supplies are in place for those that need them.
Birmingham City Council contacted those on the national database to determine who needed a food parcel because they are unable to access essential services. However, as the database is updated daily numbers are expected to increase.
Cllr Paulette Hamilton, cabinet member for health and social care, said: “It is vital that supplies get to the most vulnerable in Birmingham and there has been a tremendous effort from people and organisations across the city. The logistics involved have been difficult to navigate but everyone has stepped up to ensure the clinically vulnerable are cared for and will get the food they need.
“This major operation has involved finding a food hub where supplies will be stored and packed, sourcing a food supply and then distributing to those clinically vulnerable people who have no other way of accessing supplies.”
