Girls, having a laugh? Funny women coming up in town this week.

-

When did you last have your funny-bone tickled?  Or anything else for that matter?  If you fancy getting yourself along to some proper comedy this week, here’s a few suggestions that are guaranteed to get you giggling uncontrollably.

Angela Barnes

Last summer Angela Barnes had yet another sold-out run at the Edinburgh Fringe and has been on absolutely loads of telly and national radio.  Mainstream critics have likened her to Sarah Millican, and her new stand-up show Rose Tinted tries hard to look at the bright side of life.  If you still haven’t seen her perform, now’s your chance, she’s at the Glee Club in town on Wednesday (May 29th).

Katie Arnstein

A relative newcomer to comedy, Katie Arnstein’s debut one-woman show, Bicycles and Fish, combines jokes, storytelling and original songs. She admits the show is pretty light on both bicycles and fish and is more about being hopelessly in love and becoming a woman, but she’s sure to make you laugh anyway at The Old Joint Stock Theatre on Wednesday and Thursday (May 29th & 30th)

Sofie Hagen

On her current UK tour Sofie Hagen combines her 2015 award-winning show Bubblewrap with a Q&A and readings from her new book Happy Fat.  Sofie’s success on the British comedy scene is based on hugely important positive messages surrounding things like body-image, mental health, gender definition and of course, boy bands… Don’t miss her at Birmingham’s Old Rep Theatre on Friday (May 31st).

Scarlett Dobson

Also on Friday you could get down to Brum Craic at Symphony Hall for a free comedy night celebrating up-and-coming new acts in and around Birmingham as well as special guests from further afield.  Included on the bill this week is the very funny Scarlett Dobson, whose 2017 show Straight Outta Catford covered things like gentrification and a shifting sense of community and had crowds roaring with laughter.

Maisie Adam

You’re going to have to wait until next Thursday (June 6th) to see the hilarious Maisie Adam at the MAC.  Winner of “So You Think You’re Funny” in 2017 and nominated for the “Best newcomer” at the 2018 Edinburgh Fringe awards, Maisie is doubling up with the hugely successful Gein’s Family Giftshop comedy sketch team to present an Edinburgh preview show that comedy fans just won’t want to miss!
