A speeding driver Luke Harrington, from Longbridge, has been sentenced to six years after being involved in a fatal collision in Selly Oak.
Harrington hit speeds of almost 70mph in a 40mph zone in his Vauxhall Corsa before the crash with another Corsa on Shenley Lane in March 2015.
Elizabeth Tindall, aged 36 from Weoley Castle, who was driving the other vehicle was taken to hospital with multiple injuries and sadly died almost a week later. Her passengers – a man in his 30s was seriously injured and is still recovering − and a 12-year-old boy was also injured.
Harrington remained at the scene and was charged with death by dangerous driving following an investigation by West Midlands Police’s collision investigation unit.
The 22 year-old was convicted of the offence after a trial at Birmingham Crown Court.
He was sentenced to six years imprisonment − three of which will be spent in custody and a further three on licence – last Thursday (02/11). He was also disqualified from driving for seven years following his release.
Detective Constable Chris Ridge, from the regional Collision Investigation Unit, said: “Harrington was of previous good character but is now facing a considerable amount of time behind bars to reflect on his actions. The consequences of his excess speed are far reaching and have ruined several lives including his own.”
