McDonald’s, which celebrated the 50th anniversary of its Big Mac burger earlier this year, has announced today (15/06) that it will be replacing all of its plastic straws with paper ones.

Paul Pomroy, Chief Executive Officer for McDonald’s UK and Ireland, said: “Our customers told us they wanted to see a move on straws but to do so without compromising their overall experience when visiting our restaurants.”

McDonald’s has already taken steps in all its restaurants in the UK and Ireland to put plastic straws behind the counter to reduce waste.

A roll-out of paper straws, which will be from made from certified sustainable sources, will begin in September and the process is due to be completed in 2019.
