Millions of passengers and customers using New Street station are set to benefit from a newly installed free rehydration point.
The refreshing water fountain is now in place in the red lounge, above platforms 1b to 12b and is open today (30/04) at the Network Rail managed station.
The new facility will provide free drinking water on the go for people, helping to improve station user experience.
The free drinking water initiative, which is seeking to encourage station users to refill their re-useable water bottles, forms part of Network Rail’s wider ambitions to reduce the impact of plastic waste at its stations.
Karen Hornby, head of performance and customer relationship for Network Rail, London North Western route said: “Many of us try to make a difference by carrying a refillable bottle, although our good intentions are often thwarted by the lack of public drinking water fountains.
“Millions of people every year use our managed stations to travel, shop and eat, so this free service will make a difference to them and the environment by reducing single-use plastics.”
The initiative is in line with Network Rail’s commitment to reducing their energy consumption by 18% and carbon emissions by 25% over the next five years.
