Over 200 businesses across the city have signed up to an initiative which allows people to fill up reusable water bottles for free.
The initiative, supported by local charity ecobirmingham, who champion environmental causes in the city, aims to promote free tap water, helping to keep people hydrated, as well as bringing environmental benefits by reducing the use of plastic bottles.
Severn Trent’s Jess Fidler said: “It was great to see so many businesses signing up to be part of Refill in Birmingham. Our action day was a tremendous success and to sign up so many local businesses was fantastic. Everyone showed a real interest in the campaign.
“Businesses which signed up are now proudly displaying their Refill window stickers and are also appearing on the Refill app where people can find any Refill Station in Birmingham or across the UK.”
Annabel Clarke from ecobirmingham, who supported the launch event last week said: “It’s wonderful to see so many Birmingham businesses eager to sign up and reduce their environmental impact on the planet. The Action Day was a huge success and a step in the right direction for Birmingham to becoming a cleaner and greener city.”
Luke Crane, Executive Director, Jewellery Quarter BID added: “We are excited to be supporting Refill Birmingham with their upcoming Action Day. Making the Jewellery Quarter sustainable & green is one of our key objectives and we are hoping to see as many local businesses as possible signed up to the app. Every plastic bottle that is replaced with a refillable container is a step in the right direction and the Refill app makes it easier than ever.”
Severn Trent has launched Refill schemes in other major towns and cities across the Midlands over the past 12 months, including Coventry, Gloucester, Leicester, Nottingham, Worcester, Wolverhampton and Shrewsbury. There are now over 1400 Refill stations within the Severn Trent region alone.
The Refill app can be downloaded for free on Google Play or the App Store. Anyone wanting to get in touch, find out more about Refill, or those looking to sign up or become an ambassador, can email [email protected]
