Us Brits love a pie. Whether its home-made, from the chippy or the local. There is nothing more quintessentially English than tucking into a crusty casing, packed with our favourite fillings. British Pie Week celebrates our national obsession with the most homely food you can find and here at BU, we do the same!
Here are just some of the nicest pies in the city:
Tucked away on Waterloo Street is Pieminister, offering a generous amount of fillings encased in their beautifully golden crusts. Wildly unique flavour combos will change things up for the most seasoned pie eater.
Recommendation: Heidi – their sweet potato, spinach and red onion pie topped off with a rich and tasty goat’s cheese is a great vegetarian option, if you fancy something a little different to the norm this pie week.
The Old Joint Stock

A classic British boozer wouldn’t be complete without a pie or two on the menu. The Old Joint Stock have clearly taken note because there is nowhere better to tuck in to an award winning pastry covered in gravy than in this city centre pub.
Recommendation: Spicy Chicken Madras – a million miles away from the serving you’d get at a city football ground. This pie is piled with curry sauce, golden sultanas and a touch of fresh coriander.

This place is usually gathering praise for its wonderful pizzas. However the pies are as equally delicious and rustic, made from only the best local ingredients. Served with herb-roasted potatoes and a pickled onion and tomato chutney. You’ve got to give The Stable a go!
Recommendation: Lamb Bam Boogie – lamb, rosemary, garlic potatoes and honey. This is an absolute treat and you’ll be hoping for a gravy tasting board to match their cider’s by the time you finish!
The Lord Clifden

The Jewellery Quarter gem is renowned for the pub-grub they serve up so superbly. The Lord Clifden is a must for anyone who banishes British food as boring and beige, they’ll be in for a surprise, we promise!
Recommendation: Steak and Guinness Casserole with Puff Pastry Lid – ok, this is controversial. Some will argue that this isn’t quite a pie because the pastry doesn’t encase the entirety of the filling. Whatever your thoughts on the matter, you have to try this delicious dish. Incredibly warming.
