540,000 people have signed a petition to give parents the option not to send children back to school if they reopen in June – Government guidance released after she started her campaign says parents won’t be fined for non-attendance.
Lucy says it is still unclear whether parents have the option of not sending their children to school when they reopen in June – and says if they do have the option, a Government minister needs to announce this clearly to parents.
Starting the petition on 5th May on Change.org, she wrote:
‘I’m calling on the UK Government to give parents and guardians the option of not sending their children back to school if they reopen in June – as Boris Johnson has suggested this could happen in England. As a mum I don’t want to face serious repercussions for making a choice I feel affects the safety of my daughter during a global pandemic.’
She says “We need to know what rights we actually have during these exceptional circumstances”
Since the original posting has been signed over half a million times – the Government Department of Education issued the following statement:
“Parents will not be fined for non-attendance at this time, and schools and colleges will not be held to account for attendance levels. Schools and colleges should continue to inform social workers where children with a social worker do not attend.”
