From the 16th to the 18th of November the UK’s largest skills and careers event is coming to Birmingham’s NEC. The Skills Show is free to attend and is packed with careers advice and skills activities across a huge range of sectors. Offering a wide selection of options, careers and pathways, there’s something to suit every student. The Skills Show is suitable for students from year 7 upwards of all academic abilities. It will be taking place on Thursday and Friday from 9am to 4pm and on Saturday from 10am to 4pm.

Last year the ‘Skills and Apprenticeships Minister’ Robert Halfon came along to the event to show his support and meet some of the amazing people involved: “We’ve got hundreds of companies here, the public sector, skills competitors and people demonstrating skills. This is the best of the UK – this is the future of our country right here.”

The Skills Show will be divided into five areas, each providing a focus on particular industry sectors as follows:

Health & Hospitality

  • Beauty Therapy; fitness; cooking; floristry; hairdressing; public services; forensics.

Construction & Logistics

  • Bricklaying; carpentry; plastering; landscape gardening; plumbing; roofing; environmental science; architecture.

Engineering & Technology

  • Automotive; mechanics; robotics; metalwork; manufacturing; aeronautical; rail; inventing.

Digital & Business

  • Enterprise; accounting; network security; software; web; IT; law; telecommunications.

Creative & Design

  • Games design; music; jewellery making; journalism; graphic design; film & TV; radio; fashion.

Have a go at something you’ve never done before by trying hands-on job-related skills across a huge range of careers. Try your hand at things like TV production, demolition simulation, virtual welding, floristry and 3D modelling and much more!

Meet employers from over 130 local and national business who will be at the show, including Royal Mail, IBM, BAE Systems, NHS Careers, HS2, Airbus, Barclays and Toyota, offering top jobs, apprenticeships and training opportunities.

Hear the Spotlight talks from household names to current apprentices. Listen to “real people doing real jobs”; be inspired and find out how they got to where they are now. Last year featured stars from Robot Wars and Strictly Come Dancing, BBC Radio DJs, JCB, Jaguar Land Rover, NHS, Army, O2, The Sun, and many more!

Enjoy watching or taking part in the Showcase demonstrations which bring skills competitions to life for visitors, with experts and students demonstrating skills in an interactive and engaging format. If that’s not enough, watch the National Finals of the WorldSkills UK Competitions, where the best of the best compete at the highest level in their chosen skill. From stonemasonry to floristry, media make up to landscape gardening, the competitions give you the chance to witness exceptional talents!

Meet the Skills Champions who will be hosting an interactive stand. The Skills Champions have competed in the past as part of Team UK, Squad UK or at the National Finals of the WorldSkills UK Competitions. They will be showcasing their skills and be talking to visitors about their exciting journey so far.

Take part in masterclasses and get practical hands-on tips from inspiring young professionals. The Skills Champions will be running Masterclasses in a number of skills and are each 45 minutes long. Taking place on Sign Up Saturday, visitors will have an opportunity to take part in small and focused workshops.
