Officers from British Transport Police and firefighters were dispatched to University Station, near University of Birmingham, at around 1:10AM this morning (19/10), to reports of a fire on platform two.
On arrival, they found a vending machine that had been set alight which caused damage to the surrounding area. The fire was extinguished shortly after the firefighters arrived on the scene.
A spokesperson from British Transport Police, said: “We were called to the University Station at 1.12am on Thursday morning. A vending machine had been set on fire in an arson attack. Fire crews were called to deal with the fire which has caused quite a significant amount of damage. We are appealing for people with information to call BTP on 0800 40 50 40 or text 61016.”
University Station is the responsibility of National Rail and London Midland. They will be working with police as part of their ongoing investigation. The fire has caused no disruption to services through the station.
