Teenager shot in the back in what was believed to have been a targeted attack in Nechells

-

Det Insp Richard Marsh is appealingĀ for information after a teenager was shot in the back in what was believed to have been a targeted attack inĀ Nechells.

Emergency services, including armed officer, descended on Bullock Street, at around 3.30PM on Wednesday afternoon (21/02), following reports of a firearms incident.

The 19-year-old was taken to hospital with a gunshot wound to his lower back. The injury is serious but not thought to be life threatening, and the victim is in a critical but stable condition in hospital today.

It is believed the gunman approached the victim on foot from the direction of Proctor Street and fired two shots. Only one hit the victim, and no one else was injured.

The attacker, who was wearing a motorcycle helmet, is then believed to have got onto a waiting moped or scooter which was then driven away at speed by a second person down Proctor Street towards Great Lister Street.

Officers have launched a major investigation, and are treating the attack as attempted murder. Extra neighbourhood officers will be in the area today to offer reassurance, and detectives want to hear from anyone with information about the getaway vehicle, which was said to be mainly silver.

CCTV is being gathered and witnesses are being spoken to. The scene was cordoned off over night, but was being opened again this morning.

Det Insp Marsh, said: ā€œAt this stage, we believe it was a targeted attack.

ā€œThere were a lot of people in the area at the time and we urgently need to hear from anyone who saw what happened, or the moped or scooter that was used by the gunman to get away from the scene.ā€

Anyone with information is asked to call West Midlands Police on 101 quoting log 1497 of 21/2 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
