Aston Fire Service swapped their helmets for hairnets over the weekend as they volunteered with FoodCycle Birmingham Aston.
Volunteers from the service joined forces with FoodCycle to help create their Sunday meal, using food that would otherwise go to waste to creating free, three-course community meals.
Justin Powell, FoodCycle Birmingham’s Regional Manager said: “At FoodCycle we’re all about building communities and providing a warm, welcoming environment for people who may be lonely or hungry. The Aston fire fighters were so welcoming to the guests and supportive towards people who needed extra help. They got involved in all aspects of volunteering, from preparing vegetables for the main course to serving food and chatting with guests.
They were also able to offer free home checks to ensure that the communities homes are safe. This is the first time this partnership has happened but we want to ensure that this partnership lasts, and to encourage more partners to get involved too.”
FoodCycle Birmingham Aston is part of a national charity that serves 38 community meals each week across England.
FoodCycle Birmingham Aston serve meals at Birmingham Settlement every Sunday at 1.30 and anyone is welcome to join them. They also invite anyone over the age of 18 to join them as a volunteer by signing up on their website.
