With winds of 70mph to 80mph forecast across Britain, Network Rail and train operators are preparing for the impact of Storm Ciara this Sunday (09/02) with speed restrictions and some reduced services expected.
Amended timetables are being put in place on many routes including West Midlands Railway and London Northwestern Railway services.
These changes will result in increased journey times and customers are advised to check their journeys before setting out using live travel information services.
People living near the railway are also being asked to help keep the network free of any unexpected debris by tying down or clearing away garden furniture and trampolines.
A spokesperson for Network Rail said: “There is the potential for damage to overhead lines and tracks caused by debris or fallen trees, which could severely impact passenger services on Sunday 9 February and into Monday 10 February.
“If damage occurs, the high wind levels mean it may not be safe for engineers to work at height or with certain machinery until the wind levels have dropped. This could mean we won’t complete repairs in time for a normal Monday morning service.
“We advise passengers to check before they travel and keep in touch with the latest information provided by train operators via their websites, apps, Twitter and contact centres.”
