Hotel du Vin Trading Limited, which runs Hotel du Vin on Church Street in the city centre, was fined £120,000 at Birmingham Magistrates Court on Monday (22/01), after pleading guilty to two offences relating to mice activity and dirty conditions.
Birmingham City Council’s Environmental Health service brought the prosecution after officers visited the premises on 28th September 2016, and found evidence of mouse activity and dirty conditions in the kitchen.
The company pleaded guilty to two offences, under the Food Safety and Hygiene (England) Regulations 2013 – failing to ensure adequate procedures were in place to control pests, and failing to ensure premises were kept clean and maintained in good repair.
Mark Croxford, Head of Environmental Health for Birmingham City Council, said: “We will always take action where we find evidence of poor food hygiene or cleanliness, or pest control issues.
“On average, just over one per cent of the 7,500 food businesses across the city fail to comply with food hygiene standards.
“Our officers work closely with all premises to ensure they achieve the necessary standards required to operate safely.”
Hotel du Vin Trading Limited was also ordered to pay £12,216 costs plus a £175 victim surcharge.
Following the judgement Hotel Du Vin Hotel du Vin Trading Limited released the following statement: “The Hotel Du Vin Group acknowledges the court’s findings. The safety of our guests and staff is our number 1 priority and we take any breach of health and safety standards extremely seriously.
“We immediately rectified the issue that caused the temporary breach in September 2016 and all staff at this hotel have undergone rigorous retraining.
“We would like to reassure visitors to our hotel in Birmingham of our total commitment to maintaining best in class standards”
