To celebrate 250 years since the first section of the Birmingham Canal Navigations opened, the Canal & River Trust is launching a photography competition in partnership with the Birmingham Canal Navigations Society, to capture beautiful canal images in this special anniversary year.
The competition is open to amateur photographers and aims to capture the unique beauty of the Birmingham Canal Navigations in Birmingham and the Black Country. The photos can show anything that is linked to the waterway such as images of colourful boats, wildlife living and fluttering along the canal, examples of historic canal architecture or pictures of people enjoying spending time on the city’s canals.
The judges will review all entries and will select three finalists. All three finalists will be invited to a VIP celebration reception in November and will receive their prizes from the Lord-Lieutenant of West Midlands, John Crabtree OBE.
The prizes are:
- 1st prize – £150 Jessops voucher and a canvas made of the winning photo
- 2nd prize – £75 Jessops voucher
- 3rd prize – £50 Jessops voucher
The overall winning photo will be created into a canvas and used to help promote the 250th celebration event planned for the end of the year.
Ani Sutton, from the Canal & River Trust, said: “This year is a really special year for the Birmingham Canal Navigations and we want to celebrate with local people by getting them to capture some beautiful images of our waterways.
“Research shows that being next to water is good for your mental and physical health and with 100 miles of the Birmingham Canal Navigations to explore I’m sure there will lots of inspiration to work with to capture some lovely shots of the canal.”
Martin O’Keeffe, chairman at the Birmingham Canal Navigations Society, said: “This competition is a great way for budding photographers to get out and explore their local canal and see for themselves how lucky they are to have the canal right on their doorstep. Once on the towpath there will be loads of interesting and unusual things to see and take pictures of so I’m sure those that take part will have plenty to get inspiration from.”
Entries close on the 3 October 2019. The competition is open to all ages. For more information visit www.canalrivertrust.org.uk/about-us/where-we-work/west-midlands/bcn-250th-birthday/bcn-photography-competition
