Finding your perfect gym in Birmingham

Thinking of joining a gym but not sure where you can get what you need? Whether it’s affordability, frequency of gym classes or the type of fitness equipment available, we take a look at what some of Birmingham’s gyms have to offer.

If you’re on a budget…

The largest gym chain in the West Midlands, Pure Gym gives you unrestricted gym access to top-quality fitness equipment 24/7 with free classes included. Best of all, it’s commitment-free, allowing you to cancel any time you feel like it. Their membership doesn’t break the bank either, starting at £10.99 per month.

With a similar no-contract, 24/7 access approach, The Gym also offers one of the cheapest memberships in the city. The High Street branch provides free parking for members, has a full range of cardiovascular machines and weight machines, free classes, and even Myride indoor virtual bikes. Memberships here start at £12.99 per month.

If you’re in it for the classes…

Located at the Cube, The Club and Spa Birmingham offers a great variety of classes, including Body Pump, Zumba, Yogalates, studio cycling, running club, boxing circuits, and Dance Fit, in addition to a number of their own personalised classes to target every inch of your body.

Meridian Fitness hosts over 60 group classes a week, including the popular high-intensity class ‘Insanity’, competitive cycling class ‘Peloton’, boot camp, yoga, Pilates, calisthenics, and ‘Kettle Blast’ – just to name a few. Memberships here start at £5.76 per week.

If you’re looking to lift some serious weights…

Based in the Jewellery Quarter in the city centre, Temple Gym is home to some of the world’s best bodybuilding training facilities. Owned by six-time Mr. Olympia Dorian Yates, who incorporates his highly regarded ‘Blood and Guts’ training approach, this hardcore gym is not for the faint-hearted.

If you’re looking for a swimming pool (and some luxurious extras)…

Established by Duncan Bannatyne of Dragons’ Den, Bannatyne health clubs boast state-of-the-art gym equipment, heated swimming pools with saunas and steam rooms, as well as an in-house Bannatyne Spa, which members benefit from 20% discount on all treatments. Memberships here start at £38.99 per month.

Virgin Active at Blythe Valley Park, Solihull, features an indoor and outdoor swimming pool, with physiotherapist and spa services. The facilities also include a crèche for children aged six weeks to four years old, and a fitness programme available for kids aged three to 15. Memberships start at £62.00 per month.

Nuffield Health claims to offer much more than just your average gym. Here, members benefit from access to swimming lessons, personal training services, physiotherapy and even a health MOT. Memberships start at £38.00 per month.

From their unique functional fitness classes, to boxing, kickboxing, Olympic weightlifting, ‘Skip-Fit’ and their 15-station circuits – this gym really has something for everyone.
